WATCH: Olympian, LaShawn Merritt Plays Kick-ball with Princess Anne Middle School to Raise Money for Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts

FROM ABC CHANNEL 13 in VIRGINIA BEACH-Some Va. Beach students working to stop bullying took time out to help people they don’t even know – survivors of Hurricane Sandy.

“I feel we did very well,” said Jake Hornum, a student at Princess Anne Middle School.

They put their best feet forward, so to speak, with a kickball game and fundraiser that included special guests Olympic gold medalist and Portsmouth’s own LaShawn Merritt and the 13News Daybreak news anchors.

Merrritt jumped at the chance to help out. For him, the cause was personal.

“I had an aunt in New York who’s house got messed up pretty bad because of flooding,” he said. “But she got though it. This really touches home for me.”

The kickball event was put together at the last minute and is proof of how powerful kids can be when they come together for the good of others. At last check, they raised about a thousand dollars from Wednesday’s event..
Teamwork, respect, and acts of kindness are the hallmarks of the Rachel’s Challenge program.
